    Dangerous Substances with European Harmonised Classifications for about 3000 chemicals to the 67/548/EEC Dangerous Substances Directive (DSD) - which is reproduced in different format, but with same data, in the UK as the Approved Supply List (ASL)

  • Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - UK Chemicals Stakeholder Forum (CSF)
    The principal function of the Forum is to advise the Government on how industry should reduce the risks from hazardous chemicals to the environment and to human health through the environment.

  • Department for Transport (DfT) Dangerous Goods section
    Are responsible for UK negotiations at the UN Sub Committee of Dangerous Goods and the ADR and RID meetings.

  • Department for Transport (DfT) Transport Security section
    Department for Transport (DfT) Transport Security section whose aim is to protect the travelling public, transport facilities and those employed in the transport industries against acts of terrorism, other illegal acts, and to retain public confidence in transport security.

  • EAC List
    This explains the system of emergency action codes used in the UK, and some other countries, and lists the EAC, and ADR Hazard Identification No, for each UN Number and each Proper Shipping Name. A list of changes to the 2005 EAC list to create the 2007 List is also available (by kind courtesy of Mr D Ricketts of the Fire & Resilience Directorate, HM Communities & Local Government).

  • Environment Agency
    The leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales.

  • ERICards or ERIC's - CEFIC Emergency Response Intervention Cards
    These provide guidance on initial actions for fire crews when they first arrive at the scene of a chemical transport accident without having appropriate and reliable product specific emergency information at hand.

  • ERG 2004 The Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG2004) was developed jointly by the US Department of Transportation, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation of Mexico (SCT) for use by firefighters, police, and other emergency services personnel who may be the first to arrive at the scene of a transportation incident involving a hazardous material. It is primarily a guide to aid first responders in (1) quickly identifying the specific or generic classification of the material(s) involved in the incident, and (2) protecting themselves and the general public during this initial response phase of the incident. The ERG is updated every three to four years to accommodate new products and technology. The next version is scheduled for 2008.

  • European Agency for Safety and Health at Work
    The UK Focal Point of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work. The role of the European Agency for Safety and Health at work, (the Agency) is to support the exchange of information between the European Union (EU) Member States. The site also provides information about the UK Information Network.

  • European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)

    The European Chemicals Bureau (ECB) is the focal point for data and the assessment procedure on dangerous chemicals

  • Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
    The UN site with news and information about the GHS and full text (downloadable as pdf files)

    Developed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in partnership with LexisNexis, hsedirect builds upon the HSE’s reputation for authority in the field of health and safety,  and LexisNexis’s reputation and extensive experience of publishing practical web based information solutions. The objective of hsedirect is to provide the most authoritative on-line source of health and safety information available. The site contains a free area; as well as a huge database of health and safety legislation and guidance – subscription options start at just £20 (+VAT) for a day’s access.

    This page lists items added to the HSE website over the last three months.

  • The International Occupational Safety and Health Information Centre/International Labour Organization (ILO/CIS) server offers information in French and English on their products, services, publications, conventions, IPCS chemical safety cards and the Global Information Network on Chemical Safety. GINC is a collaborative project involving International Register of Potentially Toxic Chemicals (IRPTC) , National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) and CIS/ILO. An Index of Occupational Health and Safety Resources on the Internet is also on the same server

  • The UK's National Chemical Emergency Centre
    a world leading authority on dealing with chemicals and compliance on health, safety and environmental matters.

  • National Focus
    for Work on Response to Chemical Incidents and Surveillance of the Health Effects of Environmental Chemicals.

  • National Toxicology Program
    based at the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the server details NTP publications and events. The NTP was established in 1978 in USA by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to coordinate toxicology research and testing activities within the Department, to provide information about potentially toxic chemicals to regulatory and research agencies and the public, and to strengthen the science base in toxicology. In its seventeen years, the NTP has become the world's leader in designing, conducting, and interpreting animal assays for toxicity/carcinogenicity

    The NTP consists of relevant toxicology activities of the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIH/NIEHS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC/ NIOSH), and the Food and Drug Administration's National Center for Toxicological Research (FDA/NCTR). The NIH's National Cancer Institute (NIH/NCI) was a charter agency; however, the NCI Carcinogenesis Bioassay Program was transferred to the NIEHS in 1981. The NCI remains active in the Program through membership on the NTP Executive Committee

  • UNECE Transport Division – Dangerous Goods
    gives access to the UN Economic Commission for Europe Dangerous Goods site with access to information on the UN Model Regulations (Orange Book) and ADR (including access to lists of multi-lateral special agreements under ADR

  • US Environmental Protection Agency
    includes useful information on EPA legislation and an infuriatingly organised list of press releases

  • US Occupational Health and Safety Administration
    safety and health links on the Internet, including draft OSHA proposals, federal register and standards, and links to NIOSH and safety datasheets

  • Canada's WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) This Government of Canada site provides information on chemical hazard classification; preparation of labels and MSDSs (including ingredient disclosure); language requirements; MSDS toxicological and PPE disclosure; trade secret provisions; use of the 16-heading MSDS format in Canada; Globally Harmonized System for hazard communication; PLUS high-resolution files for hazard symbols and label borders; an indexed Reference Manual; data sheets for infectious agents (including anthrax); and much more.
