Module 6, Basic Ecotoxicology (6.022)
The importance in understanding the fate and effects of chemicals in environment
Closing Date For Registrations: 27 April 2020 (midnight)
Popular science is full of phrases such as ‘biodegradable’ and ‘environmentally friendly’, but is there really anything that is friendly to the environment? And are biodegradable materials safe? And why should we be bothered if a Daphnia dies?
To enable the chemical industry to take a responsible position in the care of the environment, it is important for those involved to have at least a basic understanding of the terms used in describing the fate and effects of chemicals in the environment and to understand how to test for environmental impact.
This one-day training module is intended for those working within the chemical industry who need to understand the relationship between potential hazards of materials to the environment and the SDS.
Whether receiving or writing an SDS, it is necessary to understand Section 12 of the SDS and the corresponding classification in Section 2. There is a lot of jargon used and this Module is intended to demonstrate the basics of ecotoxicity and remove some of the mystery of this topic.
Topics Covered Include:
- the importance of knowing potential environmental effects
- background to regulatory requirements for testing
- test method references
- basic types of ecotoxicity studies
- descriptions of terms and jargon
- importance of physico chemical properties
- supporting chemical analysis
- biodegradation and persistence
- application of CLP with basic classification
- understanding of Section 12 of the SDS
Numbers on the course are restricted to enable an informal atmosphere of discussion and time is being made available for group work examining some of the practical issues of study design and data interpretation.
Advanced Ecotoxicity – Module 12
Module 6 covers the basics for SDS writing, but Module 12 that follows Module 6 takes it to the next level and covers difficult substances, sources of data, assessing environmental impact of mixtures, self-classification of mixtures etc and also introduces longer term studies. This in turn leads on to Modules 53 and 20 that cover the Chemical Safety Report and Extended-SDS. Please see the Training page of our website for details of all courses and dates.
Module Presentation
We will deliver this training using the GoToWebinar online system (www.gotomeeting.com/en-gb/webinar), which we have used successfully for other CHCS events and training. You can use GoToWebinar free-of-charge on Windows, Macs, smartphones and tablets.
The sessions will run live and delegates can interact with the tutor and other delegates using their device microphone. The tutor will use a PowerPoint presentation, just as they would in face-to-face training. We will provide you with copies of the presentation and all other supporting documentation in advance of the training, by email. We are preparing a document giving more details about using GoToWebinar plus some tips for getting the best out of the day. This will be available shortly.
Module Tutor
The training will be given by Mark Selby of Denehurst Chemical Safety Ltd. Mark had many years' experience in this sector, from manufacturing industry, to contract test laboratories and now consulting.

CHCS is delighted to have an arrangement with the US-based Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC) whereby SCHC members can attend CHCS events at CHCS member-only rates and vice versa. If you are a member of SCHC and wish to attend this course, please email the CHCS Office at enquiries@chcs.org.uk providing your name and organisation. We will verify your membership of SCHC then email you back, providing you with details of how to register.
Delegates can be substituted at any time, subject to payment of membership fee if applicable. However, once booked, the full fee is payable. As this is a limited space training event refunds can only be made if CHCS is notified in advance, and is able to successfully re-offer the place to another delegate.
CHCS reserves the right to alter or cancel the programme due to circumstances beyond our control. If CHCS cancels, then refunds will be made.
We only accept credit card payments for registrations made within 5 weeks of the course date.
