Module 18, EU CLP (GHS) Classification for Supply - Mixtures

An understanding of the CLP Regulation and the rules for classification of products is essential to ensure that the correct classification is used in preparing good Safety Data Sheets. Specifically this module will build on the knowledge gained in Module 17 (Substances) and equip delegates to deal with classification of mixtures.

What You Will Learn

The module will include sessions covering the following topics:

  • CLP Classification – general issues
  • Discussion of new ways of classification including expert judgement, weight of evidence influences, bridging principles, generic cut-off values.
  • Classification using listed substances
  • How to get data from the Annexes.
  • Classification for Physical effects
  • Criteria for classification, use of flow charts, bridging and calculations – includes Explosives, Flammables (all types), Oxidisers, Gases, Self-reactives, Pyrophorics, Organic peroxides and Corrosion to metals.
  • Classification for Health effects
  • Includes Toxicity, Corrosion to Skin & Irritancy, Eye damage & Irritancy, Sensitisation, CMRs, STOT (single & repeat exposure), Aspiration.
  • Classification for Environmental effects (Acute and Chronic Aquatic toxicity, Hazard to the Ozone Layer)
  • Putting it all together to fully classify a mixture

Exercises will be held throughout the day to assist in the understanding of the concepts introduced.

Delegates should be aware that this module addresses the EU CLP regulation which differs in some aspects to the GHS and other regional implementations of the GHS. Where possible differences to GHS will be highlighted during the training.

Who Should Attend?

This module is mainly aimed at Safety Data Sheet writers and it will be especially useful to those coming into the field for the first time.

As this Module takes the CLP classification of substances as its starting point, it is extremely important that delegates should either have attended Module 17, or have an equivalent level of pre-existing knowledge.

Benefits Of Attending?

Attendance on this series of modules will ensure that your SDSs meet the increasing expectations of both your customers and the regulators. To ensure the most effective training with optimum involvement in participative exercises, there will be a limit of 14 on the number of students.

IOSH members are entitled to include this module in their continuing professional development records.

Module Tutor

Gill Pagliuca has worked in chemical safety for more than 25 years, providing consultancy services including classification and preparation of safety data sheets for a wide range of customers and products.

EU Brexit

The 'Brexit' outcome from the June 2016 referendum is unlikely to affect the importance of compliance with EU legislation on classification and safety data sheets. As is the case now, businesses supplying chemicals in other EU Member States or in the European Economic Area will continue to have to comply with European law. The future requirements on those supplying chemicals only in the UK may only become certain when the terms of the exit have been agreed, however UK legislation is expected to remain aligned to EU legislation, at least in the short term.

Delegate Feedback

“Enjoyed exercises. Useful working examples. Really nice and friendly help”

“Systematic approach made it easy to segregate different classification methods”

“Interactive and good pace. Very helpful presenter”

“Digestible information + good exercises. Great training for industry use”

Participants need to bring an electronic copy of the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures, including Annexes on a laptop or tablet for use during the exercises.

The latest consolidated version of the CLP Regulation can be downloaded from:

https://echa.europa.eu/regulations/clp/legislation

Please note: A calculator, or a device with a calculator app, will also be needed.
