Module 16, CLP Classification (16.001)
Closing Date For Registrations: 11 May 2020 (midnight)
Classification is the key procedure upon which hazard communication relies, and is central to producing compliant safety data sheets, labels and other documentation.
This module is designed to give an overview of the CLP Regulation and the classification of substances and mixtures.
What You Will Learn
The module will include sessions covering the following topics:
- Overview of the CLP Regulation and its relation to GHS
- Key concepts of classification: hazard classes, hazard categories, and harmonised classifications
- Different methods for approaching classification including test methods, bridging principles, calculation methods and how and when to use expert judgement and weight of evidence
- Physical hazards: which properties does CLP include, how do you measure them, and what are the classification criteria?
- What are the most important toxicological properties, the current testing recommendations, and how do you use the results for substance classification?
- Environmental effects and classification
- Sources of hazard information, how data are obtained and used
- Notification to the Classification and Labelling Inventory
- Putting it all together to fully classify substances and mixtures
Exercises will be held throughout the day to assist in the understanding of the concepts introduced.
Delegates should note that this module does not cover details of labelling, which are the subject of the separate Module 19, CLP Labelling.
This module addresses the CLP Regulation which differs in some aspects to the GHS and other regional implementations of the GHS. Where possible differences to GHS will be highlighted during the training.
Who Should Attend
The module is mainly aimed at writers of safety data sheets and regulatory personnel, particularly those who are new to CLP classification. To get the most benefit, delegates should have a basic knowledge of chemistry, toxicology and ecotoxicology, although all key concepts will be explained.
Benefits Of Attending?
The module uses a mixture of teaching and practical exercises to classify substances according to CLP criteria. This classification will be a core requirement for production of compliant safety data sheets and labelling, and an indicator to your customer and regulatory agencies of due diligence. To ensure the most effective training with optimum involvement in participative exercises, there will be a limit of 14 on the number of students.
IOSH members are entitled to include this module in their continuing professional development records.
Module Tutor
Gill Pagliuca has worked in chemical safety for more than 30 years, providing consultancy services including classification and preparation of safety data sheets for a wide range of customers and products.
EU Brexit
The 'Brexit' outcome from the June 2016 referendum is unlikely to affect the importance of compliance with EU legislation on classification and safety data sheets. As is the case now, businesses supplying chemicals in other EU Member States or in the European Economic Area will continue to have to comply with European law. The future requirements on those supplying chemicals only in the UK may only become certain when the terms of the exit have been agreed, however UK legislation is expected to remain aligned to EU legislation, at least in the short term.
Module Presentation
We will deliver this training using an online system, which we have used successfully for other CHCS events and training. There is no charge to delegates for using the software. The licence cost is borne by CHCS.
The sessions will run live and delegates can interact with the tutor and other delegates using their device microphone. The tutor will use a PowerPoint presentation, just as they would in face-to-face training. We will provide you with copies of the presentation and all other supporting documentation in advance of the training, by email. We will provide you with a document giving more details about using the software plus some tips for getting the best out of the day.
Participants need to have available a copy of the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures, including Annexes. You may want to download a copy onto your computer or portable device for use during the exercises.
The latest consolidated version of the CLP Regulation can be downloaded from:

Please note: you should also have available a calculator, or a device with a calculator app.
